Laney homecoming pushed to Oct. 17 after Richmond County cancels Saturday school events
Forecast wind gusts over 40 mph, possible tornadoes, and 1 to 3 inches of rain forced the Friday cancellation that wiped out Laney’s parade and tailgating.

Laney High School's homecoming is off the calendar, and the Richmond County School System made the call with one day to spare. On Friday, October 9, the district ran a normal school day and then canceled every district event and extracurricular activity set for Saturday, October 10 — wiping out the Laney–Josey game, the homecoming parade, and the tailgating that pull alumni back to the Laney-Walker/Bethlehem corridor on the one October weekend they all come home. The football game is now set for Saturday, October 17.
The district said its emergency-management team was tracking the forecast and communicating with local emergency officials and the National Weather Service.
The forecast behind the call pointed squarely at Saturday: Augusta-Richmond County's severe-weather notice called for 1 to 3 inches of rain — 3 to 5 in some spots — wind gusts past 40 mph, and a few isolated, potentially weak tornadoes, with the worst expected late Saturday morning and overnight. Augusta Transit treated the day as a real threat too, suspending fixed-route, ADA/paratransit, and Richmond Transit service because of the winds and running free shelter shuttles from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Laney's Saturday
Lucy C. Laney Comprehensive High School is one of Augusta's most storied schools — singer Jessye Norman and Super Bowl III champion Emerson Boozer were both named to the school's inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2016. Homecoming there is more than a game: it is the parade down Laney-Walker and the afternoon on the school's own field, the weekend when classes reunite and the neighborhood gathers in the corridor the school anchors.
The rescheduled game falls a full week after the homecoming weekend Laney's families and alumni had built their plans around. The district picked Saturday, October 17, and told the public on Friday, October 9 — the day before that weekend was supposed to begin.
A day's notice
The district's announcement ran three sentences on Friday, October 9 — one day before kickoff, the parade, and the tailgating. It canceled Saturday events and extracurricular activities in blanket terms, without spelling out what the wording actually covered or how the decision was reached. Laney's families and alumni learned the October 10 weekend was off as the schedule was already moving, and the district's announcement left the fate of the parade and the tailgating unstated.
The question left open
The forecast answers why Saturday was off the table. What it does not answer is the one-day runway — why Laney's homecoming, with its parade, tailgating, and game, was scrubbed with three sentences on a Friday, and what the district decided would happen to the parts of the weekend its announcement never named.
